Certified translation of a death certificate

A death certificate is needed in almost every process opened abroad after a person dies: inheritance, closing accounts, insurance and pensions. Bodies abroad ask for it in English, in a translation that a notary certifies as correct and faithful to the original.

When a certified translation of a death certificate is needed

A certified translation of a death certificate is needed in inheritance proceedings abroad, to close bank accounts and investment portfolios outside Israel, in claims against foreign insurers and pension funds, and to update the personal status of the surviving spouse with authorities in another country.

  • Inheritance proceedings abroad, when the estate includes assets or funds outside Israel.
  • Closing bank accounts, investment portfolios and credit cards abroad.
  • Claims against insurers, pension funds and social security bodies in another country.
  • Updating the personal status of a surviving spouse, for example for a survivor's pension.

What the certificate contains

The certificate is issued by the Population and Immigration Authority and includes the deceased's name, ID number, parents' names, marital status, Hebrew and Gregorian dates of birth and death, place of burial and issue details. The translation covers everything that appears on the certificate, including stamps and remarks.

The same spelling in every document

In inheritance proceedings abroad, the death certificate is usually submitted together with other documents, such as an inheritance order or a probate order, a will and the heirs' birth certificates. The deceased's name must be spelled the same way in all of them, according to the passport, so it is best to translate them together.

How it works

Send a scan or a clear photograph by WhatsApp or email and receive a quote based on the word count. After translation and checking the names against the passports, the notary certifies and binds the certificate together with the copy of the document and the translation, and if the destination country is party to the Hague Convention, an apostille is added where required.

  1. Send the document

Send a scan or a clear photograph by WhatsApp or email, and receive a quote based on the word count.

  2. We translate and check the names

The translation must be faithful to the original document, and it is important to check the spelling of names against the passports, so that it matches the other documents.

  3. The notary certifies and signs

The notarial certificate is signed and bound together with the copy of the document and the translation.

  4. Apostille, if required

If the destination country is party to the Hague Convention, an apostille is added where required (please confirm this with the body requesting the document).

What it costs

The fee is based on the number of words in the translation and on the notarial tariff fixed by regulation, so it is the same at every notary in Israel. You can calculate the exact amount with the certified translation fee calculator.

Questions and answers

Can you translate a certificate photographed on a phone?

The translation can start from a clear photograph. For the notarial certification we need the document itself or a certified copy, depending on what the requesting body requires.

Does the inheritance order also need to be translated?

Often, yes. A body abroad that handles an estate usually also asks for the inheritance order or the probate order. It is worth checking the full list of documents in advance and translating them together.

Is an apostille needed?

It depends on the destination country. In countries that are party to the Hague Convention, usually yes. It is best to confirm this with the body requesting the document.
