Certified Translation of Marriage and Divorce Certificates
A marriage certificate or a divorce certificate is required abroad to prove marital status, to change a name, or to include a spouse in a citizenship application. The foreign authority will ask for an English translation with a notarial certificate of its correctness.
When a certified translation of a marriage or divorce certificate is needed
- Recognition of a marriage held in Israel and its registration in another country.
- Change of surname in foreign documents after marriage or divorce.
- Including a spouse in an application for citizenship, a visa or immigration.
- Inheritance, pension and insurance proceedings abroad.
A religious marriage certificate and a certificate from the Ministry of the Interior
A marriage certificate issued by the Rabbinate is a different document from a Ministry of the Interior Population Registry extract showing marital status. Some authorities ask for one, some for the other, and sometimes for both. Check in advance exactly what was requested, so as not to translate an unnecessary document.
What matters in the translation
A marriage certificate shows the names of the spouses, their parents and the witnesses, Hebrew and Gregorian dates, and the place of the ceremony. The Hebrew date is translated as it stands, alongside the Gregorian date, and names are spelt as in the passports.
How it works
Send the document
Send a scan or a clear photograph by WhatsApp or email, and receive a quote based on the word count.
We translate and check the names
The translation must be faithful to the original document, and it is important to check the spelling of names against the passports, so that it matches the other documents.
The notary certifies and signs
The notarial certificate is signed and bound together with the copy of the document and the translation.
Apostille, if required
If the destination country is party to the Hague Convention, an apostille is added where required (please confirm this with the body requesting the document).

What it costs
The translation fee is based on the number of words in the translation, under the notarial tariff fixed by regulation, and it is the same at every notary in Israel. For an exact calculation by word count, see the certified translation fee calculator, and for the full tariff, the fees page.
The office translates from Hebrew into English and from English into Hebrew.
Questions and answers
Do the stamps need to be translated too?
Yes. A translation true to the original also covers the wording of stamps and signatures, exactly as it appears in the document.
How long does it take?
A single document is usually ready within one business day, sometimes on the same day. If an apostille is required on the notarial certificate, it is obtained at the court, usually within one business day, by courier.
Need an apostille?
It depends on the destination country. In countries party to the Hague Convention, usually yes. It is best to confirm this with the body requesting the certificate.
