Certified translation of a Population Registry extract

A Population Registry extract sets out the details registered about a person in Israel's Population Registry: name, parents, date of birth, personal status and address. Bodies abroad ask for it in English as proof of personal details, of a family relationship or of a residential address.

When a certified translation of a Population Registry extract is needed

A certified translation of a Population Registry extract is needed in an application for foreign citizenship or a foreign passport, as proof of a family relationship or personal status, in inheritance proceedings abroad where the deceased's details must be shown, and as proof of address when opening an account or in immigration procedures.

  • An application for foreign citizenship or a foreign passport, together with birth and marriage certificates.
  • Proof of a family relationship between parents and children, or proof of personal status.
  • Inheritance proceedings abroad, when the deceased's details must be shown.
  • Proof of address when opening an account, in immigration procedures and for studies abroad.

Standard or full extract

There are several types of Population Registry extract, and they differ in the amount of detail. A full extract usually also includes the parents' details and previous addresses. Check in advance exactly what the body abroad requires, and order the right version before the translation.

Hebrew dates, names and addresses

The extract usually includes a Hebrew date and the names of streets and towns. The translation renders the Hebrew date as it appears, alongside the Gregorian date, and spells names according to the passport and the usual English form, so that they match the other documents in the file.

How it works

Send a scan or a clear photograph by WhatsApp or email and receive a quote based on the word count. After translation and checking the names against the passports, the notary certifies and binds the certificate together with the copy of the document and the translation, and if the destination country is party to the Hague Convention, an apostille is added where required.

  1. Send the document

Send a scan or a clear photograph by WhatsApp or email, and receive a quote based on the word count.

  2. We translate and check the names

The translation must be faithful to the original document, and it is important to check the spelling of names against the passports, so that it matches the other documents.

  3. The notary certifies and signs

The notarial certificate is signed and bound together with the copy of the document and the translation.

  4. Apostille, if required

If the destination country is party to the Hague Convention, an apostille is added where required (please confirm this with the body requesting the document).

Population Registry extract: a digital apostille from gov.il, or a certified translation

Israel's Ministry of Justice also issues a digital apostille for a digitally issued Population Registry extract, ordered directly on gov.il without a notary. When the body abroad needs the document in English, or does not accept an electronic document, a certified translation is prepared and an apostille is added to the notarial certificate.

More on digital apostilles and electronic notarial certificates on the page Digital notarial certification and digital apostille. Before ordering a digital apostille, check that the body abroad accepts it.

What it costs

The fee is based on the number of words in the translation and on the notarial tariff fixed by regulation, so it is the same at every notary in Israel. You can calculate the exact amount with the certified translation fee calculator.

Questions and answers

Can you translate an extract printed from the Ministry of the Interior website?

Yes. An extract issued from the computerised system and printed is translated like any other document, and the translation also covers its remarks and stamps.

How long does it take?

A single document is usually ready within one business day, sometimes on the same day. If an apostille is needed on the notarial certificate, it is obtained at a court, usually within one business day by courier.

Is an apostille needed?

It depends on the destination country. In countries that are party to the Hague Convention, usually yes. It is best to confirm this with the body requesting the document.
