Certified Translation of a Birth Certificate
A birth certificate is the document most often required in applications for foreign citizenship, for a foreign passport and for registering children abroad. Authorities abroad do not accept a certificate in Hebrew; they require an English translation that a notary certifies as correct and true to the original.
When a certified translation of a birth certificate is needed
- An application for foreign citizenship or a foreign passport, for example Portuguese, German or Polish citizenship.
- Registering the birth of a child born in Israel in another country.
- Immigration, visa and study procedures abroad.
- Legal and inheritance proceedings outside Israel.
Which certificate to translate
Usually a birth certificate or a Population Registry extract from the Ministry of the Interior is translated. Check in advance exactly what the receiving authority requires: some authorities ask for a recently issued certificate, while others also ask for the parents' names or the place of birth. A full Population Registry extract usually also includes the parents' details and previous addresses.
Spelling of names
The most common mistake is spelling the same name differently in different documents. A foreign authority may reject an application because of a single letter. We therefore match the spelling to the passport or to documents already submitted, and make it consistent across every document in the file.
How it works
Send the document
Send a scan or a clear photograph by WhatsApp or email, and receive a quote based on the word count.
We translate and check the names
The translation must be faithful to the original document, and it is important to check the spelling of names against the passports, so that it matches the other documents.
The notary certifies and signs
The notarial certificate is signed and bound together with the copy of the document and the translation.
Apostille, if required
If the destination country is party to the Hague Convention, an apostille is added where required (please confirm this with the body requesting the document).

What it costs
The translation fee is based on the number of words in the translation, under the notarial tariff fixed by regulation, and it is the same at every notary in Israel. For an exact calculation by word count, see the certified translation fee calculator, and for the full tariff, the fees page.

Questions and answers
Can you translate a certificate photographed on a phone?
The translation can begin from a clear photograph. For the notarial certificate, the document itself or a certified copy is needed, depending on what the receiving authority requires.
How long does it take?
A single document is usually ready within one business day, sometimes on the same day. If an apostille is required on the notarial certificate, it is obtained at the court, usually within one business day, by courier.
Need an apostille?
It depends on the destination country. In countries party to the Hague Convention, usually yes. It is best to confirm this with the body requesting the certificate.
