Certified Translation of a Driving Licence and Vehicle Licence

Anyone moving to another country who wishes to convert an Israeli driving licence is often required to attach a certified notarial translation of it. The translation covers every field on the licence, including the licence categories and restrictions. The office also translates vehicle licences into English, for example when a vehicle is being moved abroad.

When a certified translation of a driving licence is needed

  • Converting an Israeli driving licence into a local licence in the destination country.
  • Proof of driving experience for an insurance company abroad.
  • A requirement of a licensing authority or a car rental company.

Licence categories and restrictions

The Israeli licence shows the licence categories and any restrictions, such as a requirement to wear glasses or to drive a vehicle with an automatic gearbox. The authority abroad checks precisely these fields, so they are translated in full and in a form that matches the licence.

An international driving permit is not a certified translation

An international driving permit is used for driving temporarily abroad. To convert a licence, many authorities specifically require a certified notarial translation, or both documents. It is worth checking with the licensing authority in the destination country exactly what it requires.

Translating a vehicle licence into English

A vehicle licence is a different document from a driving licence. The driving licence belongs to the driver, whereas the vehicle licence belongs to the vehicle itself: it shows the registration number, the owner's details, the type of vehicle and the period for which the licence is valid.

A certified translation of a vehicle licence is needed mainly when a vehicle is being moved abroad or registered in another country, and sometimes also for a shipping company or an insurance company abroad. It is a short, simple translation, and the process is the same as for a driving licence: send a clear scan or photo of the licence and receive a quote based on the number of words.

How it works

  1. Send the document

Send a scan or a clear photograph by WhatsApp or email, and receive a quote based on the word count.

  2. We translate and check the names

The translation must be faithful to the original document, and it is important to check the spelling of names against the passports, so that it matches the other documents.

  3. The notary certifies and signs

The notarial certificate is signed and bound together with the copy of the document and the translation.

  4. Apostille, if required

If the destination country is party to the Hague Convention, an apostille is added where required (please confirm this with the body requesting the document).

What it costs

The translation fee is based on the number of words in the translation, under the notarial tariff fixed by regulation, and it is the same at every notary in Israel. For an exact calculation by word count, see the certified translation fee calculator, and for the full tariff, the fees page.

Questions and answers

Do you also translate vehicle licences?

Yes. A vehicle licence is a short document and its translation is straightforward. Send a clear scan or photo, receive a quote based on the number of words, and the notarial certificate is sent back to you.

Do I need to send both sides of my driving licence?

Yes. The back of the licence also contains details that the authority abroad checks, such as the licence categories and the dates of issue.

How long does it take?

A single document is usually ready within one business day, sometimes on the same day. If an apostille is required on the notarial certificate, it is obtained at the court, usually within one business day, by courier.

Need an apostille?

It depends on the destination country. In countries party to the Hague Convention, usually yes. It is best to confirm this with the body requesting the certificate.
